THE PARENT STANDARD
Build the environment. Protect the relationship.
You cannot control every coach, result or opportunity. You can create a home environment where effort is supported, recovery is protected and identity remains larger than performance.
Progress the child
Calendar age does not tell the whole story.
- Account for maturity, training history and confidence.
- Expect uneven growth and temporary coordination changes.
- Avoid comparing one child’s timeline to another’s.
Protect capacity
More teams, lessons and tournaments do not guarantee more growth.
- Keep at least one low-demand day each week.
- Protect sleep before purchasing another training session.
- Coordinate loads across school, club and private training.
Create reliable access
Parents shape the food environment more than any lecture does.
- Provide regular meals, snacks and hydration.
- Avoid making food a reward, punishment or moral judgment.
- Use qualified support for allergies, medical needs or nutrition concerns.
Praise what transfers
Results change. Habits and character follow the athlete.
- Recognize preparation, courage and response.
- Separate love and belonging from playing time.
- Ask: What did you learn? What do you need?
Know when to pause
Early attention protects both health and long-term opportunity.
- Pain that changes movement deserves attention.
- Track persistent fatigue, mood change or declining performance.
- Loss of enjoyment and fear around sport are meaningful signals.

Pain, rapid weight change, disrupted eating, prolonged fatigue, menstrual disruption, repeated illness, major sleep problems, persistent anxiety or loss of enjoyment require more than motivational language. Reduce load and involve the appropriate qualified professional.
